Five Tips to Prepare for the New School Year

As the new school year quickly approaches, parents and children have been wondering what this year will bring.  With the challenges of last year still fresh in everyone’s mind, and the negative effects of the continuing pandemic, many have questions about what this year will look like.  While schools prepare to return to a full in-person model, it is beneficial to start preparing for a successful school year, no matter what ends up happening.  These are a few tips to prepare for the school year ahead.

Understand New Expectations

Last year was a particularly difficult year for teachers, students, and parents.  We all had to adapt to at-home learning, which was new for many of us.  It caused us to make changes to our learning styles, home spaces, and classroom environments to keep students safe and healthy.  This year, we are anticipating things to return slightly to normal but still some changes.  Take the time to familiarize yourself with your school’s changes and rules for the upcoming school year.

Set New Goals

When each new school year starts, you want to prepare your mindset by setting goals for your education.  Do you want to get better grades?  Do you want to focus on improving in your weak subjects?  Are you looking for new friends?  Figure out your goals, whether they are personal or educational, and set some achievable benchmarks to stay focused during those first few months.

Read Any Information

Before you step foot in your new classroom, take the time to read any information that your school, district, community, or teacher has released.  This may include lists of required supplies, summer reading material, pre-school assignments, vaccination records, and any other health information they may need from you before returning.

Organize Your Supplies

Back to school shopping should be fun, but it also should supply you with everything you need to be successful once the school year starts.  You may enjoy picking out your outfit for the first day of school, but do not forget about all the school supplies and materials that you need as well.  Organize your binders, notebooks, pencils, and folders so that you are ready to study once you start learning new material.

Get into a Routine

The end of summer is a bittersweet time.  It may also require you to make an extra effort to get back into a schedule and a routine.  This may involve going to bed earlier, eating healthier, and setting some boundaries on your social life.  Take the time to do these things in the days leading up to the first day of school to prepare your mind and body for these new schedule changes.
